Try opening up sound recorder (a preloaded Microsoft Accessory). When it opens, press record and talk. If it shows audio levels changing, then it works, and play it back to see if you have sound. If not, open up your sound options (right click on the speaker icon), choose recording, and check to see if it finds your microphone, and has it set as default. If not, fix it, and try the sound recorder again.
